For over 24 years, Mary Hart has represented a broad cross-section of clients in a variety of matters including wills, trusts, estate and gift tax planning (including estate planning for family owned businesses and large estates), long term care planning, trust and estate administration and litigation, guardianship matters, income taxation, commercial and residential real estate law (including §1031 exchanges, real estate closings, and lease/contract negotiations), construction law, contract law, and business law. She is the owner of Carolina 1031 Exchange, LLC which serves as a Qualified Intermediary and Exchange Accommodation Titleholder for Section 1031 like-kind tax-deferred exchanges, and she is an active real estate investor.
Mary received her Juris Doctor from Franklin Pierce Law Center in 1991 with an undergraduate degree in Economics from Davidson College in 1986. Mary holds licenses to practice law in North Carolina and Alaska. Her professional associations include membership in the Alaska Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association and the Land of the Sky Estate Planning Council. She is the founder and past president of the Southeast Alaska Estate Planning Council and a former member of the Alaska Bar Association Estate Planning/Probate and Elder Law sections. Her current civic commitments include serving on the boards of the The Land of Sky Estate Planning Council and the Altamont Theater.
During her career, Mary has been asked to speak at numerous events on topics such as estate planning, asset protection planning, and corporate and business matters, including an in-depth 4-part Wills and Estate Planning Seminar sponsored by the Alaska Catholic Diocese; numerous Wills and Estate Planning and Disability Seminars sponsored by entities like the Western North Carolina Community Foundation, AARP, the Reuters Center for Creative Retirement, the University of Alaska and the Seattle Fish Expo. Mary has a specific interest in empowering people to protect their loved ones and plan for death and disability.
Mary’s community service history includes volunteer efforts on behalf of Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, Inc., the Foundation for Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, the Tongass Alaska Girl Scout Council, the Southeast Alaska Friends of Montessori, the Harborview School PTA, Fairview Elementary School, All Souls Cathedral Endowment Committee. the Executive Associates of Greater Asheville, the Cradle of Forestry Interpretative Association, The Land of Sky Estate Planning Council and the Altamont Theater.
Mary is the mother of three boys ranging in age from 15 to 23. She’s heard there’s a special place in heaven for mothers of three boys – in fact, she’s counting on it. Mary is an avid reader and music lover. She has a wanderlust so powerful it took her to Alaska at age 20, where he says her claim to fame is being the fastest salmon cleaner on the processing barge, a job she had her first summer in the Alaskan wilderness. Mary is the sister of internationally recognized suspense author, John Hart. She and her boys returned back to her North Carolina roots in 2003. Mary established The Hart Law Group in 2006.
